George Washington National Forest

It was established on May 16, 1618 as the Shenandoah National Forest. It is composed of six districts which one of them is Eleizabeth Furnace which is 20 minutes from Dream View Vacation Rentals. One of the best trails is Signal Knob also known as "Three Top Mountain" before the Civil War.

Trails near Fort Valley, VA

Signal Knob Loop Trail – difficult, used for hiking and horses, dogs are allowed on leash, 9.8 miles, altitude 2,286 feet. The trailhead is located at Elizabeth Furnace Recreation Area.  From Dream View Vacation Rental, take 678 North (Fort Valley Rd.) for 5 miles. It is at the Bear Wallow / Signal Knob parking lot on SR 678, approximately 1 mile north of Elizabeth Furnace Picnic Area.

Tuscarora Trail – it is a 4.2 mile. Moderate back trail, dogs are allowed on leash, used for hiking, walking, trail running, and nature trips. 711 feet. You find beautiful streams, some rock areas . From Dream View Vacation Rental, take 678 North (Fort Valley Rd.) for 5 miles driving to Elizabeth Furnace Recreation area to get the trailhead.

Massanutten Mountain Trail – 39.4 mile, rated difficult. 5,406 ft. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on leash. From Dream View Vacation Rental take 678 north and Turn left onto Boyer Rd. and keep to the right as the road forks left twice within a mile. Continue down the forest road until it ends at a gate t and parking area. Follow orange blaze. At the parking area, walk past the gate and continue on for about 2 miles. The Massanutten Trail forks left. Take either route, as they meet up again on the other side of the reservoir. Pass the reservoir and begin a steadier climb for about 1.5 miles to the summit. There are two viewpoints at the top. One is right below the beacon facility and the other is off the Massanutten Trail. When approaching the summit, veer left away from the forest road, onto the Massanutten Trail. Follow trail for a few hundred feet to the overlook. Less than 5 hours round trip (it is not a loop).

Veach Gap Trail – 8.1 mile out and back. Moderate. Used for hiking, camping, and backpacking.  Dogs are allowed on leash. From Dream View Vacation Rental, take 678 North (Fort Valley Rd.) for 5 miles, park in the lot at the dead end. The trail is marked in yellow until it meets up with the Massanutten Trail, hang a left and continue until you reach the ridge.

Mudhole Gap Trail Loop – 11.5 mile. Moderate. 1,706ft. Used for hiking, trail running, nature trips, and horses. Dogs are allowed on leash.
